Full Description

The MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship is offered by the Government of Japan to international students who wish to study at Japanese universities as Research Students (Master's/PhD) or Undergraduate Students. The Embassy Track requires applicants to pass a preliminary screening conducted by the Japanese diplomatic mission in their home country. It is highly competitive and covers virtually all study expenses.

Monthly allowance for living expenses (approx. 143,000 - 145,000 JPY for research students)
Round-trip economy airfare to Japan
Preparatory Japanese language education (if required)

Eligibility Criteria

Must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan
Born on or after April 2, 1990 (for the 2025/2026 intake cycle, subject to annual updates)
Bachelor’s degree (for Master’s applicants) or Master’s degree (for PhD applicants)
Willingness to learn Japanese and adapt to life in Japan

Certified academic transcripts and degree certificates
Letter of recommendation from the president/dean or academic advisor
Medical certificate

Application Process

  1. Submit required documents to the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in your home country
  2. Pass the written examinations (language tests)
  3. Pass the embassy interview
  4. Obtain a Letter of Acceptance from a Japanese university
  5. Final selection made by MEXT in Tokyo
